Vancouver Opera is showcasing Asian-Canadian singers in their “Voice of the Pacific Rim”

Opera has led to many cross-cultural musical fusions… name an opera set in Asia…

Here I am playing accordion, with soprano Jessica Cheung.  We are performing the “Farewell Song” used in the Naomi's Road opera, accompanied by Mats on guitar and Harry Aoki on bass.  Jessica is one of my favorite sopranos!  This photo is from the first open house event at Historic Joy Kogawa House. – photo Deb Martin

Some of my favorite opera arias are set in Asian.  The famous tenor aria Nessun Dorma, is from Puccini's “Turandot”, set in ancient Peking.  Puccini's beautiful “Un Bel Dei” is from Madame Butterfly, set in Japan.  I like playing both of them on my accordion.

And the “Flower Duet” from Lakme, composed by Delibes, is set in India.  You will recognize this from many television commercials.  It is always so exciting to hear it performed live.  Here's a beautiful version on youtube with Sumi Jo & Ah-Kyung Lee.  And then there is also Bizet's “The Pearl Fishers” set in Ceylon.

It's a wonder that in a Pan-Asian city such as Vancouver, there isn't a real push to feature more Asian performers.  Music has always been a prime mover in breaking down racial barriers.

The Vancouver Opera is featuring their 2nd annual “Voices of the Pacific Rim” recital.
Sunday, Feb 8th, 7:30pm.

This show features young Asian-Canadian artists.  I got to know Jessica Cheung, Gina Oh and Sam Chung, when they did the Vancouver Opera Touring production of “Naomi's Road,”  which debuted in September 2005.  I saw the show many times in many venues.  The opera was based on the children's novel “Naomi's Road” which was based on the adult novel “Obasan” by Joy Kogawa.

The presence of the opera, really helped to build awareness for the “Save Kogawa House” campaign, as well as 2005's One Book One Vancouver, by the Vancouver Public Library, which featured the novel “Obasan.”

Gung Haggis Fat Choy dragon will dance with Silk Road Music's Cultural Olympiad show 1:30pm at Dr. Sun Yat Sen Gardens, following Chinese New Year Parade in Chinatown

Silk Road Music's Qiu Xia He is organizing a FANTASTIC show at the Dr. Sun Yat Sen Courtyard for Chinese New Year Parade February 1st.  Gung Haggis Fat Choy dragon will do a dance!

The Gung Haggis Fat Choy dragon boat team will bring their team mascot to Chinese New Year's Cultural Olympiad show at 1:30 pm in the Dr. Sun Yat Sen Courtyard, beside the Dr. Sun Yat Sen Chinese Classical Gardens, at the Chinese Cultural Centre.  The above picture is their dragon's debut at the St. Patrick's Day Parade.  Michael Brophy holds the head, while Joy, Deb, Hillary and Richard assist. – photo J. February 1st, Vancouver Chinatown Parade
+ special Cultural Olympiad show at Dr. Sun Yat Sen Courtyard.

This show is presented by the Dr. Sun Yat Sen Classical Chinese Gardens, who will be having admission by donation for the day.  There will be Japanese taiko drums played by a Chinese-Canadian, there will be Chinese songs sung by a White-Canadian, there will be African dancing, and classical Chinese dancing, and French-Canadian reels.  If I could have all these performers at a Gung Haggis Fat Choy dinner, I would… if we could fit them in.  But I can't… so I have to come down to Chinatown to see this show.

The Gung Haggis Fat Choy dragon boat team members will be performing a dragon dance for the 2nd show in the afternoon, following the Chinatown Parade at noon.  We have some volunteers, who
will perform OUR version of the DRAGON DANCE this Sunday, Feb 1st, at
the Cultural Olympiad show at the Dr. Sun Yat Sen Courtyard. (Chinese
Cultural Centre).

Please remember Chinatown will be very busy, and challenging to find parking.  Last year, I parked over by the Beatty St. Armouries.  The Chinatown Parkade is good – but get there early.

Please come down and enjoy the show.  Here are important times.

10:30 am – FIRST Show @ Dr. Sun Yat Sen Courtyard (we aren't in it)

12 noon – Chinatown Parade begins

1:00 – Gung Haggis dragon dancers meet @ Dr. Sun Yat Sen courtyard.
We will sit near the front row.

1:30 – 3:30 Cultural Olympiad Show. We will perform in 1st and last songs.

This show is organized by Qiu Xia He of Silk Road Music,  and the MC is Dr. Jan Walls, who did a wonderful performance of a Robbie Burns Chinese clapper tale for the recent Gung Haggis Fat Choy Robbie Burns Chinese New Year's Eve Dinner.

Dr. Sun Yat Sen Gardens celebrates Yearof the Ox on February 1st.

In Vancouver Chinatown, the Chinese New Year Festivities always take place on the first Sunday following Chinese New Year Day.

This year, Chinese New Year Day is on Monday, January 26th…. so on Sunday February 1st, come to Vancouver Chinatown.

One of my new favorite activities starting last year…. is to visit the Dr. Sun Yat Sen courtyard at the Chinese Cultural Centre because my friend Qiu Xia He of Silk Road Music is organizing a special Cultural Olympiad show for Chinese New Year.

Last year, I was fascinated by the show, which brought together many musicians and performers from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds: African, Japanese, Chinese, Latin, French-Canadian, and Celtic.  Oh my goodness… but her programming was a like fantastic dream team that I wish I could bring together for Gung Haggis Fat Choy.

But this year, we will be adding something new… a dragon dance by the Gung Haggis Fat Choy dragon boat team!

Karen always brings great enthusiasm to the audience and her performances and great performers with her!  One year at the Christmas concert, she even got me standing up and singing along with her!  It's hard to resist Karen's wonderful energy.  She will of course defer to the many performers with her.  But the truth is that it is she that sets the stage, and encourages others to shine.

Karen is also one of the singers in the accapella group The No Shit Shirleys.  They were one of best received performers at the 2006 Gung Haggis Fat Choy dinner.

Here's what the VPL website says:

The Vancouver Public Library's most anticipated annual concert bursts
with fabulous singers, spirited instrumentalists and lots of
sing-a-long carols, all hosted by Vancouver impresario and pianist,
Karen Lee-Morlang.

This
year's roster includes the brilliant Bruce Henczel on a variety of
percussion instruments, bringing an exciting array of world beats,
rhythms and tunes to the mix!

Here's a message from Karen.

Dear friends,

Have you ever wanted to hear some of your favorite seasonal tunes fused with the exotic rhythms of Cuba?

How about Spain, Brazil or Ghana?  Ireland?

Join the ever versatile and award-winning percussionist Bruce Henczel and the irrepressible piano diva Karen Lee-Morlang at the Vancouver Public Library tomorrow night for a free, fun and unique evening of “Carolling Around the World”.
Singalongs will be led by the hilarious baritone, Joel Klein and the lovely soprano, Katy Hedalen.

10th Annual Asian Comedy Night coming in January

Asian Canadians
can be funny too – and not just the butt of racist jokes.

10 years ago Joyce Lam got together with friends and
started the very first Asian Comedy Night, through Vancouver Asian Canadian
Theatre – which she founded.   Along the way VACT has received lots
of critical success and developed a loyal audience.  VACT is a pioneer in
pushing the opportunities for Asian-Canadian performerssuch as presenting the
classic Neil Simon comedy “The Odd Couple” with and almost all-Asian
cast, Asian-Canadian director and producers.

6-10 minute set to perform their sketches in front of a live audience, where a
panel of celebrity judges will award the winner the coveted RICE BOWL trophy from the Top 3. On January 8, in a 2nd performance, the
audience will be the judge and its winner-take-all for the cash

My new favorite drink: Guinness with a shot of expresso vodka

Expresso Vodka Guinness
2008_Nov25 030 by you.

Every 1st Thursday, we have Kilts Night at Doolin's Irish Pub.  Wear a kilt for a free pint of Guinness.  Next Kilts Night is this Thursday – December 4th.

Last Thursday after the BC Fed conference social at the Hyatt, I ended up at Doolin's and ordered my Guinness with a shot of expresso vodka.  My favorite bartender Geo made it up for me, after I told him they had given me one at the Atlantic Trap & Gill.

My friend Tim taste-tested it and pronounced it as “wicked!”  Time plays in the celtic band Halifax Wharf Rats – who play every Thursday night at Doolin's.  “You can't have too many of those in one night,” he added.

I have always found Guinness to be a full tasting beer, although sometimes on the bitter side.  Last year, Guinness offered a recipe on the side of the 8 pack beer case for a “Black & Blood” – mixing Guinness with a black currant liqueur.  It was okay… but a bit on the sweet side.

But the addition of expresso vodka, gives it a bite… gives it a kick… gives it a smoother rounder taste… that makes you go hmmm… and puts a grin on your face.  That's what I like in a drink.

Here's a recipe for “Irish Coffee Drop”
http://cocktails.about.com/od/vodkadrinkrecipes/r/irish_coffedrop.htm

  • 1 oz Van Gogh Double Espresso Vodka
  • 1 oz Irish Cream
  • Guinness Draught

Check out Doolin's bartender Geo in the picture below, wearing the Canucks jersey at our March Kilts Night earlier this year.  The picture ran with the March 17th Vancouver Sun story The next celebration: Wearing the tartan

Aboriginal Poetry at the Chinese Cultural Centre on Sunday noon until 9pm

I've always liked the words of Chief Dan George known as “Lament for Confederation

How long have I known you, Oh Canada? A hundred years?
Yes, a hundred years. And many, many seelanum more. And today,
when you celebrate your hundred years, Oh Canada, I am sad for
all the Indian people throughout the land.

For I have known you when your forests were mine; when they gave
me my meat and my clothing. I have known you in your streams
and rivers where your fish flashed and danced in the sun, where
the waters said 'come, come and eat of my abundance.' I have
known you in the freedom of the winds. And my spirit, like the
winds, once roamed your good lands…..

Will these words be repeated?

Last weekend to catch flight with Damon Calderwood in Billy Bishop Goes to War

2008_Nov20 003 by you.
Actor Damon Calderwood plays Captain Billy Bishop.  He shows Todd Wong his model airplane that he “flies” during his energetic performance – photo T. Wong collection

Damon Calderwood is FANTASTIC in his peformance of “Billy Bishop Goes to War”: at the Deep Cove Shaw Theatre.

Moments of applause burst throughout the performance at all the right places.
There have been standing ovations every night, except once “when we turned the houselights up too early,” producer Jack Smith told me.

This is a show you wished you had seen earlier, so you could tell all your friends about.

Billy Bishop is a remarkable piece of written theatre. And Damon
really makes each of the 18 different characters he plays distinct and
real.  Playwright John McLachlan Gray attended the opening night performance and said “it's a very clear production,” pleased that Damon really undoubtedly “becomes” each character… instead of merely playing them.

It is a showcase for:
Canadian WW1 history
Canadian theatre
playwright John McLachlan Gray
Damon’s talent

I only met Damon earlier this year, we we played against each other in the Celtic Fest’s “Battle of the Bards”

see my blog article and pictures:
Toddish McWong’s “Robert Burns” wins Battle of the Bards at Celtic Fest
http://www.gunghaggisfatchoy.com/blog/_archives/2008/3/13/3579503.html

Here are some of Damon's own words he sent to me in an email:

I just wanted to send out a final reminder about Billy Bishop Goes to War (my long-awaited and finally-realized dream role!).

Gordon
Roberts and I have had a wonderful time doing it, and some sellouts
already, but it must come to an end on Sat Nov 22. I've attached a few
pictures from our invited dress rehearsal.

We have four shows
left, and it will likely sell out towards the end, so do phone for
tickets right away if you can (call Eileen at 604-929-9456). As of this
e-mail, we have tickets left for all four shows, so hopefully everyone
that wants to can get a ticket! $18/$15.

The shows are Wed Nov
19, Thur Nov 20, Fri Nov 21, and Sat Nov 22 at 8pm each night. Deep
Cove's Shaw Theatre in North Van. 4360 Gallant Avenue just a few
minutes from the second narrows bridge.

I am so grateful for all
those people who have already come to see the show…in this case, I
truly believe the audience is as much a part of the show as are the
actors, and the great audiences we've had have made each show an
amazing ride for Gordon and I.

Joyfully yours,

Damon

Here is a message from Jimmy Tsai and Jessica Wu, members of the PING PONG PLAYA Production….

We
are extremely thrilled to write to you about the upcoming release of
our movie PING PONG PLAYA beginning November 14th! It's an exciting
time–but here's where we need your help. We'll let the movie speak for
itself (if the reactions of people who have seen the movie is any
indication, we firmly believe you won't be disappointed), but we need
your help to spread the word about the release of the movie.
Independent movies don't have the marketing budget to compete against
the mammoth studio movies, but what we do have is intense, strong
word-of-mouth (just check out any of a number of our reviews–from
outlets large and small, from critics, bloggers, and chat room posters
alike).

Please help us continue to spread the word and come
check out the movie opening weekend (Nov. 14th at the CINEMARK
TINSELTOWN VANCOUVER. 88 West Pender, V6B6N9).
